Dr Gillian Stratford
Dr Gillian Stratford is a consultant psychiatrist with twelve years experience. She currently works part time with the NHS based at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where she employed by Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust. She works partly with patients in the community, and she is the clinical lead in the department of psychosexual therapy, and she also sees and assesses people with gender identity problems.
Dr Stratford trained in psychiatry mainly in Manchester teaching hospitals, but also in Macclesfield Stockport and Leeds. She has extensive experience of General Adult Psychiatry, including depression, anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar effective disorder, and psychotic illnesses including schizophrenia, and stress induced psychosis.
She also has additional training in liaison psychiatry, which is mental health problems in physical illnesses, for example anxiety or depression in association with chronic health problems such as heart disease, diabetes or rheumatism and arthritis, and infectious diseases.
Prior to coming into psychiatry, Dr Stratford worked for a number of years in obstetrics, gynaecology family planning and reproductive medicine.
Dr Stratford has a specialist interest in psychosexual therapy, treating sexual problems which are contributed to by psychological problems such as stress or anxiety. These include erectile difficulties, ejaculatory disorders, either premature or delayed ejaculation, arousal difficulties, lack of orgasm, loss of sexual desire, sexual pain disorders and vaginismus which causes difficulty with penetration due to vaginal muscle spasm. Dr Stratford also has experience in working with relationship problems. She is a general member of the College of sexual and Relationship Therapy (CoSRT).
Dr Stratford is registered with HM Courts and tribunals service as a medical practitioner on the list of specialists in the field of gender dysphoria, and is experienced in assessment and referral of people to Gender Identity Clinics, where further assessment and treatment takes place .
Teaching and Research
Dr Stratford has an interest in teaching both medical students and doctors, and organizing training events. She is an occasional lecturer at University of Manchester, and lead for psychosexual problems on the MSc in module. Dr Stratford has undertaken a Research Training Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine, and has a number of publications relating to Reproductive Medicine.
Dr Stratford is experienced in medico-legal work providing psychiatric reports to the Courts, on clients involved in personal injury litigation and medical negligence claims, criminal offences both defendant and victim, and employment law issues. She also has extensive experience in providing reports for mental health tribunals. She is approved under section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act, 1983 as an Approved Medical Practitioner with special expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients suffering from mental illness, and is currently the Responsible Clinician for a number of patients.

She has wide experienced in both medication and psychological therapies, and will help to enable patients to find a treatment modality which is most suitable for them as an individual by explaining fully the risks, benefits and potential side effects of any treatments recommended. Dr Stratford has a commitment to help people to overcome psychological difficulties, but also to work towards advice and techniques to reduce the risk of future relapse.

Dr Stratford holds full registration with a license to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC No 3252783). She is indemnified by the Medical Defense Union (MDU No 219481B). She holds a current Certificate of Good Professional Standing for CPD from The Royal College of Psychiatrists, and has an up to date Annual Appraisal.
